ASEAN-CRN, IPSARD, and AECID share experiences and lessons learned on Agro-Insurance

HANOI, Vietnam – The Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD) under the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the ASEAN Climate Resilience Network (ASEAN-CRN) through the ASEAN-German Programme on Response to Climate Change (GAP-CC)/Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, organized the Steering Committee Meeting on Agro-Insurance: Spanish Experience and Lesson Learnt for Vietnam on 29 June 2015 at the IPSARD Headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The meeting aimed to improve the public and private stakeholders’ knowledge on agro-insurance, promote experts’ exchange of experiences, and provide technical assistance to strengthen national institutions’ design and implementation of agro-insurance systems in Vietnam, utilizing the Spanish agro-insurance model. It brought together agro-insurance think tanks from government institutions, foreign aids, and the private sector – MARD, AECID, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and Baominh Insurance Corporation.

On behalf of the ASEAN-CRN, Mr. William Martirez, former President of MicroEnsure Philippines, provided a presentation on the Philippines’ “Experiences on Agro-Insurance Risk Management”. The ASEAN-CRN serves as a platform in the Southeast Asian region that promotes climate resiliency through exchange of information, expertise, and experiences on climate smart agriculture.

The meeting is one of the key activities of IPSARD’s project titled, Sharing Knowledge and Project Experiences in Support of Progress towards a More Effective Implementation of Agro-Insurance in Vietnam and Other ASEAN Countries, which aims to provide knowledge and share experiences on agro-insurance to strengthen the understanding and capacity of all related stakeholders, particularly government officials and insurance companies to support the establishment and implementation of an effective national policies and programs on agro-insurance in the near future.
