ASEAN submits unprecedented submission to UNFCCC’s SBSTA 44 on Agriculture and Adaptation

By: Shinta Purnama Sarie

As a part of the UNFCC mandate, SBSTA 44 this year invited submissions from Parties and Observers on: ‘Identification of adaptation measures in agriculture’ (Submission C); and Identification and assessment of agricultural practices and technologies (Submission D).

For the first time, ASEAN was able to submit to SBSTA on the two issues. Vietnam, with initial efforts of Thailand, put forward the two submissions, on behalf of ASEAN Member States.

The submission process was led by the ASEAN Climate Resilience Network with support from CCAFS and FAO. ASEAN Member States will engage the 44th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) from 16 to 26 May 2016 in the World Conference Centre in Bonn, Germany to discuss these submissions on agriculture’s adaptive responses to the changing climate.

FAO and CCAFS facilitated a webinar on March 1, 2016 on the topic to better understand the SBSTA process.
