ANGA at COP28

At the Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the ASEAN Negotiating Group for Agriculture (ANGA) engaged in negotiating the terms of “the Sharm el Sheikh Joint Work on Implementing Climate Action in Agriculture and Food Security” from November 30 – December 12, 2023. ANGA negotiated actively as a regional group under the G77 and China. ASEAN Member States from Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Viet Nam sent their agriculture negotiators to jointly carve the implementation plans of this formal agenda item under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). While no outcome was reached due to deadlocked positions, ANGA gained valuable lessons that will be shared in its post COP28 briefings next year. Moreover, the COP28 UAE Emirati Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action signed by 154 countries including AMS – a momentous achievement at COP28 – was discussed.
