ANGA Joins the First Informal Expert Dialogue on the Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on Agriculture

The ASEAN Negotiating Group for Agriculture (ANGA) focal points participated in the Informal Expert Dialogue on the Joint Sharm el-Sheikh Work Programme, an inaugural event highlighting discussions on climate action in agriculture held from October 30 to November 3, 2023, at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Headquarters in Rome.

The event is a collaborative effort led by FAO and the COP28 UAE presidency in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Bank, and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

As part of the groundwork for the formal negotiations in the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 28) to be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, this milestone event gathered agricultural negotiators representing diverse groups, including the G77, the European Union, the ANGA, the Least Developed Countries (LDC), the Umbrella Group, the Africa Group of Negotiators, the Latin America Group, the United States, and a wide array of other stakeholders. The discussions focused on understanding the positions of the negotiating parties in preparation for the upcoming COP 28.

This dialogue provided an invaluable platform for comprehensive discussions and future-oriented climate action strategies in agriculture. It underscored the importance of collaboration among international organizations and countries in addressing the issue of climate change in agriculture.

ANGA focal points are scheduled to reconvene for a COP 28 Preparation Meeting on November 22, where the results and highlights of the recently concluded informal expert dialogue will be shared and discussed. The said preparatory meeting will explore collaborative actions that ANGA members could undertake to engage effectively in the upcoming COP28. This meeting is being organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) under the ASEAN-German project on “Promotion of Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains in ASEAN” (ASEAN AgriTrade), FAO-Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP), and Mekong Institute (MI) on behalf of the ASEAN AgriTrade Project.
